The Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) grows best in hardiness zones 5-9.
It is a herbaceous evergreen fern. The autumn fern is a shade-loving fern that is prized for its foliage. Autumn fern is also referred to as the Pink Shield Fern because of the slightly red color it will develop as the summer progresses. It grows 1 & 1/2 to 2 feet in height and up to 18 inches wide. The autumn fern does best if watered regularly to maintain moist soil conditions. It is used for border and ground cover and mass planting. The autumn fern is a low growing garden fern that acts as a ground cover due to it's spreading habit. Though it is drought resistant, it does prefer moist soil conditions. The autumn fern grows best in a slightly acidic, enriched, moist soil.
This is a low maintenance plant as it only requires for its old fronds to be trimmed back in the spring for the new growing season. Ships Bare Root
Autumn fern has coppery-red and green triangular fronts (leaves) and is commonly used as a backdrop to flowering shade-loving plants. This plant can be grown in shady flower beds or a patio pot as an accent plant because of its hearty nature. The autumn fern is used to establish thick background borders because of the thickness of its foliage. Because this is not a very large growing fern, it is commonly used in residential flower beds. When fertilizing the autumn fern, it does best with a water-soluble fertilizer. Autumn ferns require minimal fertilization. Fertilization should be done before the onset of spring and repeated on a monthly basis. Slow release fertilizers will provide constant nutrition for the soil the autumn fern is planted in, these are another type of acceptable fertilization methods.
