There are so many kinds of berries. Where is a right place to start? 


Blueberries are a favorite for many people. They are easy to grow and produce lots of delicious and healthy fruits every year. Many people don't realize that blueberry shrubs have a lot of ornamental appeals, too. Most grow between four and six feet tall. They have pretty flowers and pretty fruits. The fall color is particularly enjoyable, with amazing displays of reds, oranges, yellows, purples and more. 


There are many varieties of blueberries. Although they are self-fertile plants, you will get better results with more than one variety. The fruit and flower at different times, so a mixture of different kinds will give you an excellent, long season of production. Each type will have a slightly different taste, too! By using the right combination of varieties, it is possible to have blueberries from June into September. 


Shrubs such as raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries, and marion berries are also very popular. Some bushes grow in a bush-like habit. Others grow long canes that need to be staked. There is a surprising variety with these, too. There are red raspberries, pink raspberries, and black raspberries. There are even some gold-colored varieties. Most of these have thorns, but there are some child-friendly thornless ones, too! 


If you are looking for something more unusual, gooseberries have increased in popularity recently, as have goji berries, salmonberries, and serviceberries. You can add some adventure to your palate with these. They are mostly used for desserts or jams, rather than as fresh fruit, but you can eat them fresh, too. Hey, they’re your berries. You can eat them however you like!
