Chinese Wisteria

Chinese Blue Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is a deciduous, perennial vine which is native to provinces in China to include Guanxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Yunnan.

Its genus name comes from Caspar Wistar, who was a professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. The vine boasts having deep green leaves which carry around 7 to 13 egg-shaped leaflets, and it twists around its supporting structure in a counterclockwise direction. It has a diverse spectrum of fragrant flowers that grow from 6 to 12-foot-long racemes. The racemes can turn white, pink, violet, or blue, and they give off a scent similar to grapes. When in bloom, the flowers also attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Chinese wisteria also has a fruit which comes from a flat, brown beanlike pod which ripens in the autumn and may live through winter. The pods, when matured, twist open to release the seeds, though seed production is relatively low.

The vines for Chinese Blue Wisteria needs space and strong support, such as shrubs, trees, and human-made structures, to grow. They can be trained to grow vertically on a wall or fence, horizontally on the ground, or they can be trained as a tree. They are best grown in acidic, moisture-rich soil which is adequately drained. They can be slow to establish and can take anywhere from 2 to 15 years to flower (sometimes 20). While it is tolerant of shade, Chinese wisteria flowers best when exposed to full sunlight. Pruning is recommended during active growth cycles, ideally in the summer.
