Christmas Fern
Christmas Fern Polystichum Acrostichoides is a vibrant, perennial, evergreen fern that enlivens your garden with red and green tones throughout the year. It grows beautifully and with minimal effort in USDA plant zones 3 to 9 in shady or semi-shady light conditions.
Christmas Fern is a native species to eastern North America. Gardeners love it for its lush seasonless fronds and warm red stems that remain green throughout the winter, which gives it its common name, "Christmas Fern." This fern is also desirable because it is good-natured and effortless to maintain.
Christmas ferns are hardy and can grow in various soils and light conditions
Provide mulch or other organic material and keep the area moist; the plant will grow with little other care. They can also be used as ground covers in shaded areas and as cut greens for Christmas wreaths.
The Luscious Good Looks of the Christmas Fern The fronds of the Christmas Fern are typically one or two feet long and consist of many small, glossy leaflets. The leaflets are arranged in a feather-like pattern and are typically a bright or dark shade of green.
The stem of the Christmas fern is usually reddish brown or cinnamon-colored and can be slightly ridged or smooth. The roots of the plant are generally quite thick and sturdy. Polystichum Acrostichoides does not have a noticeable or strong fragrance but a slight, pleasant earthiness that may remind you of an early spring shower.
