Kousa Dogwood
Kousa Dogwood Tree
The Chinese dogwood is a lovely, Asian-native deciduous tree that reaches an average height of around twenty feet. It grows well in the full sun to partial shade in USDA planting zones 4 through 8.
While the Kousa dogwood bears a solid resemblance to several American dogwood species, the blooming period is one significant difference. Most dogwoods native to the United States put on their display of large, cottony, cross-shaped blossoms in April. However, the Kousa variety blooms approximately four weeks later.
For this reason, many experienced gardeners love to order both types from Wholesale Nursery. Thus, they ensure colorful flowers for two months instead of one.
After the petals drop from the flowers, the intense emerald leaves will bring color to your yard for the remainder of the summer and turn amber or golden in the fall.
Besides the breathtaking good looks of the Kousa dogwood tree, the species is pest-resistant, cold-tolerant, and drought-resistant. This Asian species is undoubtedly a beautiful addition to your landscape and requires minimal attention.
The Easy Care Requirements of the Kousa Dogwood Tree
This species loves a lot of moisture, but it does not like soaked roots. So as you select the best mixed-sun spot to plant it, ensure the soil will drain well.
It also wants de-compacted, fertile soil, heavy on earthworm castings, hardwood mulch, or shredded leaf litter. These organic materials will provide the nutrients this ornament tree requires. Repeat this "feeding" twice a year, spring and fall. If you live in a zone that receives ice, snow, or extended cold, you should also insulate the roots with at least a 1" thick layer of mulch in the fall.
