Ajuga Reptans

Ajuga Reptans
Ajuga
Ajuga reptans is the perfect groundcover plant to help you quickly fill an empty spot in the garden. The plant spreads fast, creating a dense green carpet with vibrant, rich purple flowers that bloom in the spring. This species will thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. It prefers full or partially sunny growing conditions. However, it is a resilient grower that will adapt to many lighting conditions.
Ajuga, which some gardeners call bugleweed, is ideal for natural weed control. Ajuga reptans spreads fast. Each plant can spread up to 18" across. Its growth habit is similar to lawn grass, sending out several roots that form tiny stems and eventually form new plants. The rapid growth speed eventually chokes out weeds.
It is heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant, cold-tolerant, pest-resistant, and disease-resistant. Its very hardy nature makes it an excellent option for many challenging conditions.
Ajuga Is a Colorful Groundcover Plant
Ajuga flowers will emerge in the middle to late spring. Tall spikes, up to 10", will rise above the green foliage. The flowers are tube-shaped with two petals that form a lip shape. They form along a green stem in clusters.
As the first hot days of summer arrive, the foliage takes center stage, continuing its reproduction and spreading across the garden bed. The leaves enrich to dark green. They create a thick mat with occasional whorling.
Caring for Ajuga Reptans
Ajuga is almost wholly maintenance-free, provided you plant it in a spot with adequate drainage. The plant might require minimal care, such as controlling spread by cutting back runners a couple of times per year or deadheading the spent flowers after they bloom.
This groundcover plant tolerates many soil conditions, from somewhat moist to moderately dry soil. It prefers an inch of water per week, especially when blooming. However, it will recover from dry spells with no trouble at all.
