Wild Ginger

Wild Ginger Plants 3 For $12.99 Asarum Canadense is a hardy, low-growing, herbaceous perennial plant well-suited for ground cover. It loves heavy shade but will tolerate filtered sunshine. The lovely herb grows well in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8.

The species is a native of Asia. However, it is well-adapted to North America, flourishing in southern Canada and much of the United States. The plant takes its name from its aroma--a soft but crisp, spicy, gingery fragrance.

Wild Ginger Is a Lovely, Lush Green Plant to Use in the Shade

Wild Ginger has a habit of spreading fast and staying low to the ground as it forms colonies. Its maximum height is about one foot, but it generally stays shorter. The plant is lovely, with glossy, rich green, heart-shaped leaves.

The leaves have prominent veins, giving them a leathery look. The flowers of wild ginger plants form a tubular bell shape and are petite. Each blossom measures under three inches. They are burgundy, copper, or purple colors. Although lovely, these flowers usually form near the base of the plant, hidden by the abundant green foliage. Besides being useful as a ground cover plant or in the shade garden, it is lovely in a low front row of a garden border, natural areas, an understory plant near ornamental trees, or on the shady side of your home's foundation.

Caring for Wild Ginger Plants Asarum Canadense is a beautiful, low-maintenance addition to your shade garden. It prefers well-drained but still moist soil. The plant is robust and resistant to numerous growing challenges, including deer, rabbits, heat, drought, flooding, disease, and pests. Your maintenance tasks will be few: twice-annual fertilizing in the early spring and the late season, adding a few scoops of mulch in the fall, and watering only during hot, dry spells.
