Thuidium Moss
Fern moss is a lush, dense species that will form dense, lush green mats, creating an excellent groundcover plant for your shade garden. The species requires a setting that provides partial to full shade and will grow best in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 9.
Thuidium moss is a common species that naturally grows throughout much of North America, Europe, and Asia. It generally grows in moist, shaded environments such as forests, along
stream banks, and on the base of trees. It may also occur in some open areas such as rocky outcrops, shaded grasslands, and along the edge of wetlands.
Thuidium Moss Is Lovely and Low-Maintenance, a Winning Combination
It prefers soil rich in organic matter and well-drained and does well in environments with
moderate humidity and moderate to high rainfall. Once it establishes itself, fern moss is
good-natured and undemanding, requiring almost no care.
The leaves of Thuidium moss are small and delicate. They are oval or elliptical-shaped with a shiny finish. As they reproduce, the moss creates dense clusters covering bare spots beautifully and efficiently.
It is perfect for use in many shaded landscaping projects. Consider fern moss for covering rocks or unsightly stumps, creating a topiary, nourishing and providing moisture in a container garden, or indoors in a terrarium. As long as you have a nice, shady spot, it will grow happily.
Thuidium moss is soft to the touch and has a velvety texture. It is spongy, cushioned, and absorbent. Although it loves moisture, it can withstand brief hot or dry spells. The rich color may fade during a drought but rebound to its glorious green with the first rainfall. It is, indeed, a resilient moss.
