Irish Moss

Most people confuse Irish moss for moss, but in actual sense, the plant is a type of seaweed. Over the years, the plant has been used as a healing sea vegetable where it is used to strengthen malnourished individuals.

Irish moss is mainly remembered for its contribution in the 1800s, where it was used as the primary source of nutrition during the famine. It came in handy during the famine because it was readily available, easily harvested, and easy to prepare.

 In today's world, Irish moss helps solve many respiratory problems, for instance, pneumonia and bronchitis. This is because Irish moss has a softening effect on respiratory tissues, specifically the mucus membrane, which means the plant can solve most respiratory problems. In addition to soothing the mucus membrane, the plant also has a mild laxative effect on the digestive tract.

 Irish moss has ionic minerals such as iodine which help support the thyroid; the iodine mineral also helps reduce conditions such as fatigue, slow heart rate, inability to tolerate cold, poor hair and skin, and low metabolism are associated with poor thyroid function.

Irish moss can also be used externally since it can be soothing and soften the skin

In addition to softening the skin, the plant also eases eczema, sunburn, dark circles, wrinkles, chapped skin, and psoriasis.

 Irish moss is a nourishing and energizing food source since it contains beneficial vitamins and minerals. Some of the minerals in this plant include magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, folate, and selenium. Irish moss is usually used for cooking seaweed broth; the broth helps cure the physical injury, debilitating illnesses, traumas, and fatigue.
