Goat's Beard

Aruncus Dioicus is a flowering herbaceous perennial that gardeners prize for its showy, feathery plumes. This species loves nothing more than basking in the full summertime sun and will perform well anywhere within USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 7.

Goat's Beard takes its name from the famously feathered flowers. They are tall spikes that host hundreds of tiny white or creamy pink florets that form an incredibly puffy or bushy shape that resembles a goat's beard.

The plume can achieve a total height of up to 6' tall and spreads through an underground root system, so be sure you plant them spaced several feet apart to encourage that growth. The leaves are a lovely shade of green, large, oval, and with toothy edges. When the plumes finish showing off, you can cut them back to promote a bushier shape or leave them to seed and enjoy watching the birds snack on them.

Caring for the Goat's Beard Plant

This species is a native of the United States, where it grows in meadows or clearings in the eastern forests. Those areas are generally rich in organic materials like leaves, mosses, and decayed trees and hold much moisture. Replicate these conditions in your garden using mulch or peat moss; you will have a beautiful plant that requires little else.

Goat's Beard is a hardy, moisture-tolerant, drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and pest-resistant species. Wholesale Nursery often recommends this plant to new gardeners who want something that will grow easily and quickly in their first garden.
