Cinnamon Fern
Osmunda Cinnamomea is a perennial fern that is a native species to eastern North America.
This plant is a perfect combination of gorgeous greenery and low maintenance. It will thrive in USDA planting zones 4 through 9 in a partial to full shade growing environment.
Cinnamon ferns typically grow in wetland areas and are commonly found in bogs, swamps, streams or creeks in nature. They are also highly sought after for their versatile application in landscaping and gardening, particularly in shady areas. They work well as a ground cover plant, to accent flower beds, for foundation plantings, or as ornamental species.
Cinnamon Ferns Are Attractive and Colorful
It gets its common name from the color of its fertile fronds, which are reddish-brown and resemble cinnamon sticks in shape and hue. Despite its name, the plant does not have a spicy aroma; instead, it smells mildly organic and earthy, as all ferns do.
It has large, feathery fronds reaching up to four feet tall. The fronds comprise many small
leaflets, forming a feathery pattern. The leaflets are typically a bright green color and have a shiny finish. The stem of the cinnamon fern is usually light brown or rust and can be slightly ridged or smooth. The roots are dense and thick, supporting the weight of the tall fronds efficiently.
Caring for Cinnamon Fern Plants
Cinnamon fern plants have very few care needs. They are hardy, free of pests and disease, and resistant to weather extremes.
Osmunda Cinnamomea requires consistent moisture to thrive, so keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Those who live in an area that experiences low rainfall will often run a soaker hose twice a week for an easy-care way to moisten them.
They do not require manual fertilization, trimming, or other maintenance.
