Caring for the Fiddlehead Fern Is Incredibly Easy
Growing and maintaining fiddlehead ferns is easy, as they are hardy and resilient plants that thrive in various conditions. Here are some tips to help you grow and maintain fiddlehead ferns:
● Site selection: Fiddlehead ferns prefer moist, shady areas with well-drained soil. They
grow naturally along streams, rivers, and wet woods.
● Soil: Fiddlehead ferns prefer soil rich in organic matter. They will grow in various soils but prefer soil draining quickly.
● Watering: Fiddlehead ferns need consistent moisture to thrive. They should be regularly watered to moisten the soil, especially during dry spells.
● Fertilizing: Fiddlehead ferns do not require much fertilizer. A light application of a
balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can be beneficial.
Fiddlehead Ferns Have a Unique Appearance
Fiddlehead ferns take their common name from the young, tightly coiled fronds of the fern that appear in the spring. The fiddleheads are a delicate, tender green, usually about two to four inches long. When young, they are still tightly coiled and resemble the scroll of a fiddle--ergo, the descriptive name.
The mature fronds of Onoclea Strughioptersis will uncoil, generally in the late spring or early summer. They are large with a feathery appearance and have multiple branches and leaflets.
They can get as tall as five feet but generally max out around 3' to 4'.
The plant is usually dark green. It will grow into a loose vase shape, with the fronds arising from a central point at the base of the plant
