Sawgrass Is a Fast-Growing Ground Cover and Ornamental Grass for Wetlands

Cladium Mariscus is a unique and striking marsh plant that is native to the wetlands and marshes of North and South America. With its distinctive appearance and range of ecological benefits, this plant is an increasingly popular choice for gardeners and landscapers alike. It will thrive in USDA planting zones 3 to 7 in the full sunshine.

Sawgrass grows in dense stands along the edges of ponds, lakes, and rivers. It is an effective groundcover that can aid the decompaction of the heavy wet soil; thus, it assists in preventing soil runoff.

Sawgrass Has a Tall, Distinguished Presence This plant is beloved by coastal gardeners for its distinctive appearance, with long, narrow leaves that are typically green but can also have a yellowish or brownish hue. Cladium Mariscus is also a highly productive, self-seeding species that produces many seed heads in the late summer.

The name "Sawgrass" comes from the sharp, serrated edges of the leaves, which resemble the teeth of a saw. This plant also has lovely, tall spikes like ( Reedgrass )of creamy-white flowers, which bloom in the late summer and early fall, adding even more fantastic color to this already striking plant.

Sawgrass Grows Fast and Is Undemanding in Care Needs

Cladium Mariscus is a hardy and adaptable plant that is well-suited to a wide range of growing conditions. This plant can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including poorly drained soils, and it is also able to tolerate some flooding, making it a great option for coastal gardeners.

Care is simple--just plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. This plant requires no seeding, fertilization, or other manual care. Cut it back once yearly, at the end of the winter, for the most abundant season of growth.
