Soft Rush Grass (Juncus Effusus) Is a Lovely, Highly Agreeable Ornamental Species
Juncus Effusus is a highly adaptable and attractive ornamental grass species. It’s a North American native species, well-suited to almost every growing challenge on our continent. It is most suitable for USDA plant growing zones 3 to 9.
It loves the full sunshine; however, it will adapt to filtered light settings. Soft rush grass blades appear fine and delicate, but they are tougher than their looks suggest. The with long, slender, green grass-like plants grow in dense but appealing clumps. This habit makes for a lush ground cover. The grass can reach as tall as five feet and produces spikes of small yellow or tan flowers in the late summer and fall.
Soft Rush Grass Helps Create a Healthy Local Environment
Besides its good looks, one of the most significant reasons to include Soft Rush Grass in your landscape is its positive impact on the local ecosystem. This plant provides a haven for wildlife, including songbirds and small mammals, and in the fall its seeds are a good source of nutrition.
Soft rush grass can also help prevent soil erosion in wetland areas. It will thrive in highly moist soils where less hardy plants might not flourish. Covering these boggy, wet areas can help prevent soil erosion, as it helps to control runoff and prevent soil erosion in areas prone to heavy rain and flooding.
Soft Rush Grass Is Extremely Easy to Maintain
Soft Rush Grass is a hardy grass once established, drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant, and disease-reistant. Juncus Effusus is a low-maintenance plant and has few regular care requirements. It is self-sustaining and will not ask you for daily—or even weekly—care.
After about three years, the plants will become densely packed. You can divide them by digging them up and moving them to another area to enjoy their beautiful greenery even more.
