Bishop Weed
Bishop Plant
Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum' is an excellent, fast-growing groundcover--a herbaceous perennial that will cover bare areas quickly. It will brighten partial shade and full-shade spots with its creamy white and light green foliage. This plant grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 9.
Bishop plants came to North America from western Asia and northern Europe. However, it is well-adapted to local growing habitats in the United States today. You often see it growing wild with zero care in shady spots like ditches, near the edges of natural areas or woods, and along power lines.
The Bishop Plant Adds Natural Good Looks to Your Yard
A Bishop Plant can reach as much as 3' tall and has lovely variegated, cream, and green leaves and tall, skinny stalks. Many gardeners use this in the middle row in their garden borders.
The flowers are a lovely shade of white with a drop of cream. They bloom for several weeks during the last weeks of spring into the first of summer. Blooms form from tiny florets that cluster together in a whimsical umbrella shape. They attract pollinator insects, like bees, butterflies, moths, and dragonflies.
Why Bishop Plant Is One of the Best Ground Cover Species
Bishop plant has a creeping habit, making it perfect for covering vast expanses faster than you think. It is a vigorous grower because it spreads through a robust underground root system. New shoots emerge from the soil reliably and quickly.
Gardeners who love the good looks of this plant but want to control the fast spread do so by planting it in large containers or urns and placing them in their shade gardens.
But that fast growth rate also provides two significant benefits: soil decompaction and erosion prevention.
