Blue Flag Iris

The Blue Flag Iris is native to North America and has been well-known to symbolize the three parts of power: faith, courage, and wisdom. This plant can be easily identified by its showy violet-blue flowers that bloom in the early summer months. The Blue Flag stands between two and three feet tall and comprises narrow, long leaves about one-half an inch to an inch wide.

Blue Flag Iris Thrives in Wetland Areas

Its basal, sword-shaped leaves appear from its creeping rhizomes. Each leaf is bluish-green and showcases a vein down its center, making it appear folded. When this plant flourishes from mid-June to mid-July, each flower will be between two and a half and four inches wide. They feature purple, down-curved sepals that have white and yellow veins.

The Blue Flag Iris produces a three-celled fruit capsule. It measures around three-quarters of an inch in diameter and one and a half inches long. Inside each fruit are dark brown seeds that will persist over the winter season. This plant attracts a variety of wildlife, including honeybees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and songbirds.

Known as the Iris Versicolor, Northern Blue Flag, Harlequin Blueflag, Wild Iris, Large Blue Iris, and Larger Blue Flag, this violet-flowering plant flourishes in wet environments like water gardens and around ponds and other wetland features. This herbaceous plant is deficient in maintenance and is part of the Iridaceae family.

You can expect the clumps of basal leaves on this hardy perennial to stand erect. They will be about one inch in diameter at their base and taper off gradually toward their pointed tip. With smooth leaf margins and parallel venation, this marginal aquatic plant's leaves will provide a beautiful green look throughout the year.

Each flowering stock will produce one or smaller alternative leaves. At their axil, you can expect one to two flowers to bloom. Its blue-violet flowers will have three sepals, three stamens, three petals, and three style branches with stigmata, complete with an elongated and angular green ovary. The style branches will be upturned and form tubular structures. This unique plant will remain flowered for around one month and let off a pleasant floral aroma.
