Sweet Gum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua) also known as American Storax, satin-walnut and star-leaved gum among other names is a tree that is native to a large part of North America stretching all the way down to extreme northern central America. It thrives warm-temperate and tropical regions such as Mexico and the Southern United States.

Sweet Gum Seedlings Graphic Appeal

The tree features a symmetrical, egg-like shape when its branches get too heavy during its first couple years of cultivation. It produces round shaped fruit that carries its seeds and that remain on the tree until the winter months. The branches have a distinctive growth which has made people remark upon it as “wing-like” in appearance. In the wild, the trees have been observed to grow as high as 150’. The tree lives for quite a long time, ranging up to 400 years in age.

Uses Of Sweet Gum Seedlings

Its leaves turn red-yellow-purple in the fall, which offers a vibrant splash of color to your property, lawn or landscape. It’s also a great shade tree and is one of the most popular choices for commercial hardwood lumber in the United States as well. It also attracts a range of wildlife such as a variety of birds (among them being finches, turkeys and morning doves just to name a few) and ground animals such as chipmunks and squirrels who like to feast on the fruits and seeds produced by the tree. In the proper situations, the tree can grow between 1-2 feet per year.
