Red Weigela
Red Weigela
Weigela Florida is a long-blooming deciduous shrub with beautiful, vibrant red trumpet-shaped blossoms that bloom several times per season. The flowers appear to spill off the shrub, giving it a casually elegant appearance. It will thrive in the full sun anywhere within USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8.
Red weigela is a good-natured shrub that gets along well with others in your garden. Wholesale Nursery will often advise our customers to invest in this shrub this plant when they need something that will add height behind a row of perennials. It has a lovely vase-like shape, broad at the crown and slender at the trunk. Leaves are a medium green with an ovate shape.
The blossoms will help your plants stay healthy and robust by attracting pollinating insects like bees, birds, and butterflies.
Another reason our customers adore red weigela is how little care it demands. After planting, it will develop its root system with little more than water, fertilizer, and occasional trimming. This plant is ideal for gardeners of every skill level, from new to experienced.
The Care Requirements of Red Weigela Are Few
- Caring for Weigela Florida starts by selecting the perfect full-sun planting site. It is an early spring plant and relies on the sunny skies to help it awaken and form its leaves and buds in the still-cold air.
- You will also fertilize it early in the spring--before it flowers--and in the late summer or early fall.
- If you live in a colder region, blanket the base with hardwood mulch or a thick layer of shredded leaves to protect the roots from extreme temperatures.
- Those who want their shrub to stay shorter can prune the red weigela but should do so only after they bloom for the year.
