Chestnut Oak Tree
This tree is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that will flourish in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8. This species enjoys a long lifespan of over 200 hundred years, so when you plant one, you leave behind a beautiful legacy.
It has an abundance of large, deep emerald-toned leaves, an espresso-brown single trunk, and multiple sturdy branches. It achieves a maximum height of eighty feet.
This native species can adapt to the weather conditions throughout lower New England, the mid-south, and west to the Great Lake and midwestern states. It is drought resistant and can withstand almost everything Mother Nature can throw at it--snow, high winds, ice, or an occasional flash flood.
Three Compelling Reasons to Grow a Chestnut Oak Tree
Here are three excellent benefits of planting these lovely trees:
- You create a unique ecosystem in your backyard: The Chestnut oak has sturdy limbs, just like mother birds seek out in the springtime to make their nests and lay their eggs. The birds will enjoy the foliage that hides them from predators and shields them from the weather. Besides birds, the acorns that drop in the fall make nutritious food for squirrels, deer, and other foraging mammals preparing for the winter ahead.
- You place less demand on the local water supply: Wholesale Nursery suggests this tree as ideal for areas with frequent water restrictions or xeriscaping. While it loves moist soil, it will adapt to drier conditions with little trouble. You will only need to water it during an extended drought.
- You'll improve your soil quality. The vigorous roots of the chestnut oak tree loosen the earth in its immediate vicinity. This loosening allows any rainwater to penetrate deeply instead of running off, which is especially important in the hotter parts of the country. It also permits nutrients from its falling leaves and acorns to seep in and improve plant health.
