Sassafras Tree
Sassafras Albidum is a mid-sized, gracefully shaped, deciduous tree. It will thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 9 in full sun to partial shade.
This deciduous tree will reach a mature height of up to 70' tall, but it generally averages around 55'. It grows relatively fast compared to other trees, adding about 2' of annual growth. It will quickly become a refuge for a multitude of wildlife, including birds, squirrels, moths, butterflies, chipmunks, and dragonflies.
The sassafras tree is, interestingly, a native species to two continents--Asia and North America.
Sassafras Tree Is Incredibly Hardy and Easy to Care For
With the help of only Mother Nature, this tree flourishes on its own. All this hardy tree requires is a spot in sunshine or filtered light and an inch or two of water each week for the first few months after you transplant it.
The sassafras tree is heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant, drought-resistant, and disease-resistant.
Unlike some trees, it does not care about soil quality and will flourish even in heavy clay or compacted soils. Instead, it can relieve soil compaction as its roots will dig below the surface and push the earth upward--a natural de-compaction solution.
The Sassafras Tree Is as Beautiful As It Is Hardy
The sassafras tree grows upright, appearing to reach for the sun. Its trunk has a warm, cinnamon tone that enriches every landscape.
It has a well-formed, cylinder-shaped crown featuring lobed, true green leaves on top and pale green or cream on the bottom side. The leaves can be as large as 6" long and 4" wide. They usually turn orange or red in the fall, but sometimes they might present as yellow.
During the second half of the spring, female trees produce multi-petaled light green or light golden flowers. After the flowers fade, blue to black fruits emerge and ripen in the autumn. Although they have no value for human consumption, these fruits provide an excellent nutritional source for fall and winter wildlife.
