Sweet Gum Tree
Sweet Gum Tree
Liquidambar Styraciflua is a North American native species deciduous tree that's tall, handsome, and will thrive in the full sun in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 through 9.
The sweet gum tree gets its name from the fruit it bears in the autumn. Gumball-shaped seed pods drop from the tree during the winter months. Although they are inedible to humans (despite the candy-inspired name!), your feathered friends and winter mammals will appreciate them when less food is available during the cold season.
Why Grow Liquidambar Styraciflua?
Wholesale Nursery often suggests the sweet gum tree to customers who inquire about species well suited for hot, humid, or wet conditions--this one will rise above all these challenges. Liquidambar Styraciflua originated in freshwater swamps, river beds, and flood plains across the southeastern region--it has a natural aptitude for moist conditions.
Conversely, it is drought-resistant and can tolerate short dry spells when the flood waters recede. It is resilient and carefree for the gardener, making it a popular choice for natural areas, reforestation, and conservation projects.
A final reason you might choose a sweet gum tree is to mitigate any soil compaction which leads to eventual erosion. This tree has a sprawling and shallow root system. As the roots strengthen and begin to sprawl, they will loosen the soil, healing it from the inside out.
The Sweet Gum Tree Is Impressive and Handsome
The sweet gum tree is tall, reaching a mature height close to 100', with up to a four-foot diameter trunk. The crown becomes fuller, with thick branches that form a pyramidal shape.
The leaves that adorn the canopy of this beautiful tree create a star shape with multiple lobes and can be as large as 8" long. Its leaf color is a deep green during the early season and purple, rust, gold, or orange in the fall.
