Bird's Foot Violet
Bird’s Foot Violet
Viola Pedata is an early-blooming ground cover perennial that welcomes springtime with lovely shades of blue-violet or dark purple. It grows best in a mix of sunshine and shade in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8.
Bird's Foot Violet is named to describe its leaves, which grow in a long narrow shape resembling a bird's claw. Those leaves are a cool silvery or blue-green with distinct lobes that give them a unique shape.
The violet flowers each have two uppers and two lower petals and often have a two-toned appearance. The plants make an excellent ground cover, with the green foliage continuing to provide beautiful green color for many months after the petals fade.
Bird's Foot Violet reaches approximately 8" high and wide. It's substantial enough to stand alone or makes a reasonably sized companion to other perennials or annuals. This site makes it fantastic for planting on a garden border, in pots or containers, along walkways, or almost anywhere you can think of.
Caring for the Bird's Foot Violet
As a North American native species, the Bird's Foot Violet is well-adjusted to many climate conditions throughout the United States. It is resilient and hardy: drought-tolerant, cold-tolerant, heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and pest-resistant.
It originated across much of the nation, from the wooded areas of New England to the upper-south and midwestern regions. Although it prefers filtered light, it will adjust to full sun with a little extra watering.
It needs only about an inch of water per week, loves mulch or peat moss added to the soil, and needs quick drainage. Once you optimize your garden to meet those needs, it will ask little else of you.
