Brown Eyed Susan
Rudbeckia triloba is a favorite native wildflower with beautiful yellow or orange petals and a brown center or "eye." They prefer a place of honor in the whole or part sun in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 10.
This species is a North American native originating across the midwestern and Great Plains states prairies. Today, the Brown-Eyed Susan is well-adapted and grows in almost every area of the contiguous United States.
This flower is a biennial, meaning it completes its entire lifespan in two years. However, it is self-seeding, so once you plant the bare-root flowers that you receive from Wholesale Nursery, you will need to plant them again. The seeds it drops in those first two years will grow and continue the cycle without you putting in additional work.
Brown-Eyed Susan Is a Tall, Lovely Flower
Brown Eyed Susan reaches a total height of up to 39" high and 12" wide. Like other coneflowers, they grow in clumps that help them conserve moisture. It will multiply and spread across your garden from one year to the next. You can control this spread by digging them up and moving them--or sharing them with friends or neighbors.
The flower stems are sturdy and green with burgundy or brown undertones. The petals are orange or golden-toned, disc-shaped rays that center around a lovely brown pom-pom eye.
The bright color combination is eye-catching not only to humans but also to pollinator species. You will often see bees, butterflies, and birds visit your Brown Eyed Susan, spreading pollen and promoting a healthier ecosystem.
