Geranium Maculatum

Wild Geranium is a hardy perennial plant that grows in meadows and woodlands. The Latin name for wild Geranium is Geranium maculatum, which means spotted or marked and refers to the flower markings on this plant. The genus name, Geranium comes from the Greek word grants, which means crane.

The name refers to the shape of its leaves, which resemble cranes flying in groups. It has fragrant, rosy purple flowers and large leaves with pointed tips. Wild Geranium is also known as cranesbill geranium or storksbill. They can now be found wild in most of the southeastern states, as well as along parts of the west coast. The plants prefer moist soil and partial shade.

Wild geranium blooms season

The wild Geranium has a long bloom period, but individual flowers only last a few days. The blooms appear from May to June, with each flower lasting for about three or four days. They have a powerful smell.

Wild Geranium blooms from May to June, with the flowers appearing in white, pink, or red. The fall leaves change color and becomes vibrant shades of orange. In addition to these attributes, wild Geranium acts as an annual herbaceous plant that can be used for ground cover.

Wild geraniums bloom spring through summer. The flowers are typically pink, purple, or white and are small compared to other flowering plants but bloom in clusters that can be up to 4 inches (10 cm) long. Each variety's color depends on the wild Geranium you choose to grow.

You can plant several varieties near one another to enjoy their beautiful colors throughout the growing season.

Hardy Planting Zones

Wild geranium plants are found in damp woodlands and meadows. They grow best in moist soil, though they can tolerate a wide range of moisture levels. Wild Geranium thrives best in planting zones 3 to 9, except zone 4. It is hardy enough to withstand extreme temperatures without succumbing to damage.

In addition to hardiness zones, geraniums also require a certain amount of sunlight and water each year. Geraniums thrive in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. They should be watered thoroughly but not overwatered, especially when the plant is young.

Conclusion

Wild Geranium is a beautiful native plant used in gardens or containers

The flowers are attractive to bees and hummingbirds, so it is also a good addition for pollinators. You can plant Wild Geranium as a ground cover if you want a manageable height.
