Royal Fern Fronds grow up to 3' tall and provide a sturdy stem base. They make an excellent border or background plant in a landscape for the domestic garden and will grow in shady or filtered light areas. The Giant Royal Fern may seem to appear to be a member of the legume family. However, it is a fern. This fern would look great when planted as a foundation or even as a background with other plants and flowers due to its extraordinary height. It would also look great as a border for a garden. This fern has a clumping root system so it will not spread. The tips of the fertile fronds are where the spores located and in those are the sori. This can often make it show as if the fern has flowers on it, although it doesn't. The fronds can grow up to 3 feet on its own.
Giant Royal Fern plant does the best when it has mulch added around the roots so it can keep moisture in.
Giant Royal Fern also called Osmunda Regalis. It will thrive best in hardy planting zones 5-8. The growth rate of the fern is up to 30 inches per year. When the fall comes, and heavy frost hits, you can start pruning your fern and cut back the brown or dead fronds; As spring arises, the new growth will sprout and new growth will appear. Cutting the dead back will help promote that new growth. The only thing to beware of is that some animals will dig up the plant and find them edible. This fern grows in small clumps or clusters but has large fronds or leaves. Each leaf can grow large and provide a lot of shade.
