Green Velvet Boxwood 12-18" Description

Green Velvet Boxwood

Green velvet boxwood (Latin: Buxus 'Green Velvet) lends a gorgeous, traditional appearance to any setting. Its petite size (five-foot or so maximum height) makes it easy to add almost anywhere in the yard with a mix of sun and shade. It grows in USDA planting zones 4 through 9--it is a frost-tolerant evergreen shrub.

This species originated in Canada. It's a hybrid that combines the most vigorous traits of two traditional boxwoods--the Korean and the English boxwood. That combination helps make it very robust. It's disease-resistant, rabbit and deer damage-resistant, heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant, and strong enough to tolerate pruning.

TN Wholesale Nursery suggests this species for anyone who wants a smaller shrub that will still create a stunning visual impact.

Caring for Your Green Velvet Boxwood

Buxus 'Green Velvet' is almost an effortless shrub. Careful planning when you install your new shrub will set you up for a pleasing, carefree experience later.

You can plant this as a specimen, container plant, or low-growing hedge. It is happy just about anywhere with partial shade.

Here are three easy requests that this evergreen requests:

  • ● Moist but well-draining soil: This species loves moist soil but prefers to dry out completely between waterings. Find a spot with excellent drainage.
  • ● Decompaction of the soil: Soil compaction will cause faster water runoff, and the roots will not receive the necessary moisture. Decompact the soil before you plant your shrubs. The good news is that once you do this, the Green Velvet boxwood will grow roots that help prevent a recurrence of the compaction.
  • ● Fertile soil: Add some organic compost or slow-release fertilizer when you plant this shrub. After that, you only need to do this twice a year (springtime and early fall).
