Least Bluet is a Fast Growing Perennial
Least Bluet is botanically known as Houstonia pusilla. However, some of the more familiar names this flower called are Tiny Bluet and Small Bluet. These plants grow grouped in a cluster and will multiply on its own. The plant grows approximately 6 to 8 inches high and 8 to 10 inches wide. The flower is light blue to violet blooms that appear delicate in appearance that is about 1/8 inch across with a yellow center of four stamens. The flowers have four petals, and when the flower begins to fade, a fruit develops in the middle that splits open when ripe. The leaves on the plant are solid with no teeth or lobes and dark to medium green. The Least Bluet is considered a wildflower and found in some states growing in nature in forest areas, meadows or hillsides. The flower grows well in zones 3 through 8 and should plant with a spacing of 3 to 6 inches.

Least Bluet is a fast-growing plant that flowers several times in a season and can have more than one stem and bud at a time. When placed in a planter it has a cascading appearance spilling over the sides. The flower attracts many kinds of butterflies and small insects. The very small Least Bluet is a delicate and fast-growing perennial flower that appears during the year’s warmest seasons. The first time they come up during the year is in the early spring and bloom in the early summer. From the beginning, these flowers group in a cluster of light blue flowers. You will find single flowers growing separately, but this is less common. They are called both Houstonia Pusilla and Hedy Crassifolia and grow to about 2” high, 3/8” in diameter, and the blooms about 1/8” across. It is recognizable for its light but elegant blue-violet color. This little guy often resides in wet forest areas or hillsides, but you will find them pretty much anywhere in nature. In the southeastern region of the United States, they are frequent inhabitants of the average lawn in the early days of spring. But they are so lovely and so refined a wildflower that many people look forward to their appearance. They are a comforting presence and give the property a feeling of peace and tranquility. The scientific name of these flowers is Houstonia Pusilla. Also the Least Bluet, they are known as the Tiny Bluet or Small Bluet.
