Description

The Moss Differs Greatly From Most Plants In That It Holds Moisture For Long Periods Of Time, Due To Its Lack Of Vessels

Moss is the perfect choice for filling vacant spots, as it thrives on even the barest minimum of moisture and shade. As the moss is relatively low-maintenance, it prefers compacted, poor-quality soil and will even be happy with no soil at all. There are twenty-two thousand varieties of moss worldwide, so you have quite a few options. An excellent way to narrow down your choices in what garden moss types to use is to determine how you want to envision the moss's environment. Nothing says a lawn has to be grassy, and a damp, highly shaded yard, in particular, may perform better with moss tolerant to foot traffic.

Mosses are unique to most flora as they are non-vascular plants in the land plant division Bryophyta. They are only about a few centimeters tall at most, and they absorb water and nutrients mainly through their leaves, along with photosynthesizing for their food supply from moisture and sunlight. They differ from other vascular plants in lacking water-bearing vessels. Like liverworts and hornworts, the haploid gametophyte generation dominates the life cycle as mosses reproduce by dispersing seeds through their spores.

Mosses are fans of damp environments, so it's essential to keep the soil consistently moist for your plant. That's not to say that you cannot overwater moss. You'll have to be careful not to create a puddle or swamp while watering, in which case you should try to tip out any excess water when possible. To keep your moss healthy, mist the plant moderately and give it a good watering about twice a week. Always filter your water and refrain from using tap as much as possible since tap water can contain too much chlorine and affect the plant's growth potency.

Moss Grab Bags Are Advantageous Especially If You Feel Conflicted Between Options For A Moss Garden

The Moss Grab Bag is an excellent choice if you have difficulty taking your pick between moss species provided in the nursery. Each moss is hand-selected and packaged with great care before the shipping deadline. Some mosses may include cushion moss, known for its striking and silvery foliage depending on its moisture level. The cushion moss is great for accenting the entire garden, though another choice would be sheet moss and its knack for creating a carpet of its own in the landscape. The formidable Rock Cap Moss is another wise option, as it grows over many things, including rocks, which look impressive in gardens where you want an incredible amount of character.
