If you want to design the most beautiful flowering garden, but you are located in zones 4-9, where the days and nights have limited direct sunshine and are colder than other parts of the country, you are in for a delightful treat. There are a variety of perfect perennials that are colorful, lush, and will flourish and thrive in your Zone 3 garden.

Perennials are plants that don’t die each year like annuals

They have a limited blooming cycle, with some early blooming in spring and others later in the summer. Perennials will pop up through the ground or automatically begin coming alive year after year.

Perennials spread beautifully on top of the ground like Maidenhead ferns. Some perennials have flowers like Shasta Daisies, Purple Coneflower, and Wild Aster. Other perennials fill and complement larger areas throughout the landscape, like Burgundy Glow Privet, Oak Tree, and Sassafras Trees. Others are colorful without blooms and provide depth and dimension to a garden. Red Osier Dogwood is a striking tall spike-like plant that will complement any pretty perennial in any zone. Another plant that will add gorgeous dimension to add to your Garden is Broome Sedge, a beautiful grass-like plant that seems to dance in the sunlight.

Perennials are hardy and thrive in moist soil and partially sunny or shady gardens—designing a garden that features a variety of perennials in each zone. Each perennial is different, so it’s essential to know the plant by researching and understanding how it grows. We have garden experts to help you get the best perennials for your location.

If you love perennials, you know how many shapes, sizes, and colors they come in. There are perennials for every climate and every garden aesthetic. One fun way to add to your landscaping is to add pops of white. White is an eye-catching color that looks great with many flower colors.

Bloodroot

This attractive white blooming perennial has a daisy-like appearance with bright white petals and yellow centers. They bloom in the spring and will grow up to 12" tall. They can be grown outdoors in zones 3 through 9. They make excellent border plants, but they will display their pop of white anywhere you plant them. They need either partial shade or full shade to thrive.

Dutchman's Breeches

These flowering plants have lovely, unusual flowers that resemble a pair of pants. They are a fun way to add something out-of-the-ordinary to your landscaped areas. The flowers are striking against the dark-green leaves that are lacy. This white blooming perennial can be planted in zones 3 through 9. They like partial shade to full shade, and they love moist areas. They tend to grow wild in forests and alongside streams. It grows to be up to 12" tall.

Daisies
The daisy is such a classic that they are instantly recognizable. The white petals are set off perfectly by the dark green leaves and stems and the bright yellow center of each flower. They thrive in full sunlight but will tolerate partial shade. They will bloom in the summer in zones 3 through 9. They don't need enormous water, and they are drought tolerant. Ensure that you plant them in soil that drains well to keep the roots healthy. They are perfect for the front row of a flower bed or as border flowers. They will grow to be up to 2' tall.

Lily of the Valley
The lily of the valley is a beautiful, delicate white flower that looks like a delicate bell. The long, dark leaves perfectly enhance the bright white of the flower. Each of the stems from the base will grow anywhere from five to 15 of these fragrant little bells. This flowering plant does well in areas of partial shade. The ideal soil is moist but well-draining. They will grow up to 12" tall and just as wide. They will grow in zones 3 through 9.

Trillium Plants
This eye-catching white blooming perennial has large white flowers with tiny yellow middles. They can grow to be 9" to 12" tall and thrive in partial and complete shades. They are best in zones 3 through 9. They need to be planted in fertile soil that has good drainage. They are best planted in the late summer through the early fall. They are easy plants that don't need much care if it rains regularly.

Add a white flowering plant or two to your flowerbed to get it noticed.
