HAY SCENTED FERN – DENNSTAEDTIA PUNCTILOBULA
This fern has fronds that can grow to be 40-100 cm tall. It typically grows in woods or open woods that have either damp or dry acidic soils. Hardy planting zones are 3-9. Growth rate is up to 12 inches per year for the Hay Scented Fern. Hay Scented Fern gets its name because when the fronds are broken, crushed or damaged they have a light smell of hay. They can grow up to 36 inches tall and up to 9 feet wide. This fern can grow well in shade to partial sun.
It is a fast grower and can become established quickly. They grow in areas that are hard to grow other plants. It can become a groundcover if left ungroomed. It is mistaken a lot for other ferns but once you smell it you know the name. It will die in the cold winter and then grow back the next year. It has a golden yellow color in the fall. This fern would go great in an area where one needs or wants to cover a large area quickly, and cheaply that is also attractive. However, do to its hardiness it is not advised to plant this fern along with weaker growing plants as it will take them over. Due to how quickly they can spread it is recommended to plant them 18 inches apart from each other. Although they can be planted in full sun, it will not have its lush look in a full sun environment.
