Rubus Occidentalis is a North American native species, initially from the southeastern United States. The flowers are small but plentiful and rich in nectar that the early spring pollinators will enjoy. Those little blossoms produce the famously juicy and sweet dark purple to black berries later in the season. They're perfect for baking pies or canning preserves.
Besides becoming a viable food source, the Shrub is lovely. Most are surprised to learn that this shrub is part of the rose family and has small thorns that reflect this relationship. The small oval leaves have a cooler green tone and form on slightly arched branches.
The Black Raspberry Has Just a Few Care Requirements
The black raspberry is hardy, robust, and resilient. It's tolerant of many soil types, drought, heat, and cold. It needs only minimal help from you. Here are it's few needs:
- Watering needs: This bush needs about 1" of water per week from spring until fall. If you experience a long spell without rainfall, you might adjust that amount if it needs a helping hand.
- Soil drainage: Although it loves plenty of water, this shrub does not prefer continuously wet roots. The full sun location may dry quickly on top, but it must also drain well from beneath.
- Fertilizer: This shrub needs twice-annual fertilizing in the spring and fall. Organic gardeners can utilize nitrogen-rich woody materials to meet their needs.
- Spring frost protection: Although cold-tolerant during winter, the blossoms form relatively early. Thus, a late-spring frost can compromise your entire harvest. Gently cover the blossoms with burlap to avoid frost damage after flowering.
