Box Elder Tree
The beautiful box elder tree, acernegundo is a fast-growing North American native species within the maple tree family. It is a water-loving, full-sun to partial sun dweller that will thrive in almost every state. It will do well in USDA plant hardiness zones 2 through 10.
The box elder tree is suited to many environmental challenges. It strongly prefers consistently moist to wet soils like you might find along a riverbank, stream, pond, or floodplain. However, it is also tolerant of drought. It does not care about soil quality and will flourish in even the harshest weather conditions, as evidenced by the large swath of growing zones.
About the Box Elder Tree
The box elder tree is a manageable mid-sized species. It generally achieves a mature height of approximately fifty feet; the crown is often almost as broad as the height. The trunk grows noticeably straight and has a lovely tan or light brown color.
They produce clusters of small fruits in the fall. Although of no value to humans, they remain on the stems throughout the winter and provide much-needed nutrition for wildlife.
Acer negundo also has several alternative common names, as follows:
- Ash-Leaf Maple
- Ashleaf maple
- Maple ash
- Boxelder (expressed as one word when you search for it)
- Manitoba maple
- California box elder
- Western box elder
- Negundo maple
- River maple
Why You Should Consider the Box Elder Tree
The box elder tree is helpful because it easily tolerates climate extremes. However, the most compelling reason to plant this species is soil retention. Erosion occurs in flood-prone areas, and the roots of this tree will loosen the earth to allow better water penetration, thus mitigating the damage.
