Orchard Grass Is a Lovely Green Grass Suitable for a Mix of Sunshine and Shade

Dactylis Glomerata is a popular grass species adored for its ability to grow in a variety of environments and climates. It will be easy to grow in USDA zones 3 through 7 and prefers a mix of sun and shade.

Orchard Grass gets its name from its ability to grow well in orchard environments, enjoying the shade and cover of fruit trees and other crops. Some grow this grass in pastures as a feed source for livestock, due to its high nutritional value to grazing animals.

This grass is very hardy, withstanding winter temperatures as low as -30°F. Furthermore, it is drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and pest-resistant. Because of its undemanding nature, it’s incredibly useful as a ground cover in an orchard or to restore a meadow.

Orchard Grass Adds a Touch of Flair When Used as a Ground Cover

Dactylis Glomerata has a distinctive appearance, with lush green leaves and dense clusters of stems that can grow up to three feet tall, although it generally reaches an average of about eighteen inches. The leaves of this grass are a bright green color and are typically around one inch wide.

During the summer months, Orchard Grass produces attractive clusters of flowers that are purple or brown in color. These flowers provide a valuable source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators.

Besides its helpfulness as a ground cover or ornamental species, Dactylis Glomerata also offers a range of benefits to nature. This grass is an important home for a variety of wildlife species, including birds, pollinating insects, and small mammals.

Additionally, Orchard Grass is able to absorb and retain large amounts of water, making it an effective tool for preventing soil erosion and mitigating the impacts of storms and floods. Because of this internal water storage system, it’s incredibly drought-resistant—perfect for those who have watering restrictions.
