The sun-loving pin oak tree grows to be about 65 feet tall in acidic, moist soil. Especially when mature, this tree can handle some minor flooding, except when it is actively growing.

Pin Oak Seedlings Appearance

It puts on male and female flowers. The male flowers grow on last year’s growth, and they are a yellowish-green. These slim flowers have a cylinder shape and are usually between 1.25-and-4-inches long. Each male flower contains several stamens. Female flowers appear on short stalks that are usually less than 0.75-inches long. From one to four flowers can appear on each spike. These reddish-green flowers contain an ovary with three stigmata. The wind cross-pollinates the flowers.

Alternate deciduous leaves grow on it with each one capable of being up to 6-inches long. Each leaf has five-to-seven, glossy green lobes with wide concave sinuses. The leaves turn russet red, bronze or red in the autumn.

Each female flower is replaced by an acorn that takes two years to develop to its globoid shape and are usually between 0.33-and-0.5-inches long. About one-fourth of that will be covered in a tan cap while still maturing that turns light reddish-brown when mature.

Pin Oak Seedlings Life Span

The pin oak tree often lives to be over 100 years old. Young trees have a pyramidal shape. When this tree that usually grows up to 24 inches annually becomes mature, it becomes more oval. By the time it reaches its mature height after about 30 years, its shape becomes more oval. At that point, it can have a span of 25-to-45-feet.
