Blood Root Plant

Blood Root Plant
Blood Root
Sanguinaria Canadensis is a native North American flowering herbaceous perennial. This early spring flower loves showing off when many other species are still asleep for the winter. This plant loves the shade and will perform best in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 7.
The flowers are small, measuring under 3" across, but they are lovely nonetheless. Eight to twelve thin, pure white petals and a sunshine yellow center comprise each flower. The plants have beautiful, lobed, rich green leaves.
Blood root gets its name from a unique trait. If you were to take a knife and cut into this plant, you would see that it releases a scarlet fluid resembling blood. Those first settlers who arrived in modern-day Virginia and North Carolina learned of this species from the local Native Americans who taught them how to extract his dye for making clothing, cosmetics, and household goods.
Caring for the Blood Root Plant
Blood root is an easy-care species. It will grow in various conditions, spanning from some of our coldest climates across the New England and Great Plains states to the deep south. It also does not care much about soil type--as long as you keep it moistened but well-drained, it will get along fine.
It does prefer fertile, enriched soil. You can manually fertilize the soil in the early spring and early fall or keep organic compost or peat moss around it all year long.
This species is disease-resistant, pest-resistant, drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, and cold-tolerant. It's a good-natured and well-adjusted wildflower.
