Salix Sericea is a shrub and a member of the genus Salix commonly known as willows. Salix comes from the Latin word "jump," about the plant's rapid growth. However, rapid growth in this genus is associated with a short lifespan. It is a native species found in the Eastern half of Northern America, where it grows on the borders of lakes, streams, swamps, on ridges, or along rivers.
This plant ranges in size from the weeping willow tree to small shrubs. It is considered an excellent alternative to plant in place of the non-native shrub. The plant is not fuzzy about soil quality and performs well in moderately acidic moist soils with fine to coarse textures. Willows are propagated easily from cuttings, and the roots quickly grow. They control erosion in certain areas and are the host plant for caterpillars of the Acadian hairstreak butterfly, Saturium acadica. The planting season of Salix sericea is from early to mid-spring. Plant outgrown plants in a container into a partially shaded sunny site that is moist but free draining.

The plant grows from 2 to 4 meters tall and has long, thin twigs that become purplish with age. The spear-like blade leaves are about 6 to 10 cm long, 7 to 8 mm wide, lanceolate, acuminate, reddish for a short period, and dark green. On top, the leaves are lightly hairy, light green, and thickly covered with silky white hairs underneath. During winter, the leaves drop off or wither but persist on the plant.
It is a deciduous plant with multiple stems that thrives well in the sun or shade. The production of silky willow flowers comes before the leaves. The flowers are yellow-green during the flowering season between March to May and completely turn yellow during the fall season. A stress-free plant, silky Willow and Silky Willow Tree is low-maintenance that does not require much attention from the gardener.
This plant has many economic purposes, such as producing timber, paper, snowshoes, fences, shelter, nets, ropes, and ornamental, architectural, and horticulture uses. Store in a cool place and keep roots moist and covered with plastic until they can be planted. Water for the first week daily after planting.
