Sphagnum Moss
Peat moss is a beautiful wet environment plant that is an excellent soil amendment and
growing medium. It will thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. This moss prefers full shade but will adjust to a mix of sun and shade.
Sphagnum moss grows naturally in moist, acidic environments, such as bogs and swamps.
Sphagnum moss is a pioneer species that can colonize areas where other plants cannot grow due to the high moisture and shade. Such areas often experience challenges such as constant standing water, erosion, or soil compaction.
Peat moss can play an essential role in the ecosystem by providing a habitat for other plants and animals, helping to purify water by removing pollutants and helping to rebalance the soil's nutrients.
Sphagnum Moss Has a Lovely, Earthy Look
Sphagnum moss is usually green or brown, forming dense clumps or mats. The individual plants are petite and do not have stems or leaves but have thin, delicate branches.
Peat moss has long, thin leaves typically about 1/8 inch wide and up to 2". The leaves are
usually a light greenish to a yellow hue. However, they can also occasionally be red or brown.
The moss forms dense mats or clumps that can grow several inches thick. Sphagnum moss has a spongy texture. After old plants die, they drop to the bog's bottom and become a helpful soil
amendment or a mulch to help the garden retain moisture.
Most gardeners associate peat moss's distinct, earthy aroma with their favorite time of year--the arrival of the springtime growing season.
