Southern Arrowwood provides an excellent food source for bees, which are essential to plant life.

Viburnum dentatum, commonly known as southern arrowwood, roughish arrowwood, or arrowwood viburnum is a fruit-bearing shrub native to the central and eastern parts of the United States and Canada. It grows to be 6-12 feet tall and up to 10 feet wide and has oval-shaped dark green leaves with jagged edges which change color to a thick, lovely red in Autumn. In spring and summer, Viburnum dentatum produces small white flowers which grow in clusters that are 2-4 inches across, and are often fragrant as well. In the autumn it produces fruit, which is dark purple or black and berry-like.

These berries are commonly consumed by birds, while the flowers attract butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds; to say the least, you will see lots of beautiful wildlife in your yard after planting Viburnum dentatum.

Because of its size, this plant makes attractive privacy hedges or even just a single beautiful bush. Viburnum dentatum is a flexible plant–it can thrive in full sun, part sun, or full shade. It can also thrive in either dry or wet soil, but it prefers moist soil. Viburnum dentatum grows in climate zones 3-8 and prefers a soil pH of 6.6-7.5 but will tolerate higher pH. To obtain more seeds for the next year, either buy more or take the berries from the plant in late fall. Over winter, they must be stored in a cool, dark place, preferably around 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, they may be planted about 5 feet apart to allow them to grow to their full size. This bush is a beautiful addition to any backyard as hedges, a privacy screen, or just a single plant. Viburnum dentatum ships in bare root form and ready to plant.
