Vinca Minor 5 For $14.99 Description

Vinca Minor is a Popular Ground Cover

Vinca minor is commonly known as the lesser Periwinkle or creeping myrtle. Its genus name derives from the Latin word that signifies binding or winding around, and it has long and flexible stems that people back then used in making a wreath. The leaves of Vinca Minor are smaller than those of Vinca Major.

One of the more widely used and popular ground covers, Vinca is a herbaceous perennial evergreen that belongs to the Apocynaceae family, or a species of flowering plant in the dogbane family. Originally from Europe, this plant is native to central and southern Europe and southwestern Asia in Turkey. Its dainty and blue lavender flowers emphasize themselves against the backdrop of luxurious dark green leathery foliage during springtime or early summer and intermittently throughout the year.

It is commonly spotted creeping down steep hillsides and banks, which creates a refreshingly green effect on bare areas. More than thirty varieties of vinca plants exist, with others having a different combination of foliage and other bloom colors.

This broad-leaf evergreen plant multiplies and is drought resistant. Although it needs little maintenance after it is situated correctly in the landscape, it may still require removing tall weeds. Once established, This plant will likely shade out future growth of weeds, thus eliminating this chore.

Vinca Flowers Blooms Magnificently During Springtime

The best way to grow this plant is in a partially shaded area in acidic soil since it could create vigorous growth. These plants help in blocking views from the outside if used as a climber on non-living support. Before planting the Vinca, choose what best suits your landscape and ensure it is what you want, as removing them once established in the area is difficult. The plant spreads aggressively or overtakes a space with its naturalization ability.

It is a tough, low-maintenance, and pest-free versatile ground cover that is a good cover for bulbs. It is effective on slopes or banks to stabilize soils and prevent erosion. The flowers of these plants are usually blue, but the color can also be lavender, purple, or white. It is about one inch across, five petals blunt at the tip, and arranged in a spiral. It blooms magnificently in springtime and occasionally in summer; however, this hardy plant can also tolerate the frost of the fall.

Periwinkle Plants, or Vinca Minor, actually originated from Europe. In the 1700s, North America was lucky to receive this perennial flower. As time went by, this beautiful ornamental flower became famous worldwide in West Portugal, the Caucasus, and Turkey. Periwinkle Plants have many pretty violet flowers with white as their base color. The beautiful Periwinkle flowers are tiny in size with five-petal blossoms.

You only have a chance to witness its violet, white or blue flowers in early spring until midsummer to admire how the sparkle of its leaves gives your garden a lively ambiance. Besides, the thick texture of the dark green leaves gives you a sense of strength and durability. This perennial has worked like fine wine - the more years passed, the more it got known by everyone.

Some of you may know the Periwinkle as creeping myrtle as the plant grows by creeping. If the plants grow inadequate, they can reach heights up to 15 to 16 feet. Using the ground as the medium, the Vinca Minor will drag, and put their roots along the way, then the blue or white flowers will gradually shrub to complete the ground cover of Vinca Minor.

For Anyone wanting a dream garden and pretty ground cover plants, Perwinkle is an excellent option. Its elegant-fancy look also benefits as it can block and cover unwanted weeds and wild plants. When you are ready to have Vinca Minor, there are some essential things that you must pay attention to. The first is the location of the placement. Putting them in zone 4-8 will be the perfect decision. Although these plants are adaptable in almost every area, avoid planting them in the yards or walkways. Other than that, Vinca Minor survives happily in various soil conditions. Whether it is slightly acidic or alkaline drained soils, both are tolerable.

When caring for Periwinkle, some plants may be sensitive to sun and light. However, Periwinkle grows without any struggle in full sun, along with adequate watering. Putting them in partial shade is preferable if you are afraid about the water measurement. The key to maintaining the common Periwinkle is balanced and suitable placement.
