The White Althea is known by the scientific name Hibiscus syriacus and is a member of the Malvaceae family. True to its name, this plant produces beautiful white blooms during the majority of the summer months. The USDA hardiness zones for this shrub are 5B through 9A, and it has a moderate tolerance to drought conditions. It grows best in well-drained clay, loam, sand and acidic soils. It reaches a height of 8 to 10 feet, with a spread of 4 to 10 feet. The bark is a lovely light gray, and the foliage is a soft green.
