Ranunculus Repens is a perennial that's easy to identify, thanks to its cheery, bright yellow flowers. It will thrive in either partial or full shade in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 9.
Creeping buttercup is a traditional, lovely flower. Sunny and good-natured, it is small enough to tuck into almost every shade garden.
Caring for Creeping Buttercups
Creeping buttercups originated in Europe and arrived with early settlers. Today, it is well-adapted to the growing conditions of the United States, and you'll find it from Maine to Florida and out to the west coast. It loves moist to wetter conditions but prefers quicker drainage. You'll often see gardeners use it as a ground cover plant in natural areas, rain gardens, or around ponds and water features.
It is drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant, and disease-resistant.
If you keep it shaded and watered, this little wildflower will thrive with twice-annual fertilizing.
Creeping Buttercup Is a Cottage Garden Classic
The creeping buttercup flower is cute and petite. Each flower has five cheerful yellow or golden petals with a delicate light green or yellow-green center. Leaves are small and measure only 2" to 3" long, glossy, and with somewhat serrated edges--several dark green leaflets form on many stems on the plant.
The plant spreads by developing runners that offshoot from the plant. A healthy creeping buttercup establishes roots quickly and will start the "daughter" plants by the end of the first season. The progression is even faster in the second season and beyond. When choosing this sweet little flower, you will have an excellent, reliable groundcover plant.
