Carolina Allspice
Calycanthus Floridus is a relatively small, deciduous, North American native shrub originating in the Appalachian Mountains. Its natural range extends from Virginia to north Florida. It will thrive in the total or partial sun in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 to 10.
Carolina allspice is a beautiful, relatively fast-growing shrub. At Wholesale Nursery, we recommend this species not for its natural good looks but for its ease of care. It is ideal for anyone who wants an attractive plant that will not demand too much time.
The Carolina allspice is hardy and resilient: drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, pest-resistant, and disease-resistant. It's also adaptable regarding the amount of sunlight it receives and will flourish in either full or filtered sunshine, but it must receive about six hours of daylight.
It has only one request: fertile, well-draining soil.
Besides Its Low-Maintenance Nature, Carolina Allspice Is a Natural Beauty
Carolina allspice is a shrub full of natural charm and a cottage garden feel. It can reach about 10' and grow as much as 10' wide. When you plant it, give it the space to stretch out as it grows. Do you need a shorter shrub? No problem. Calycanthus Floridus is agreeable to pruning, so you can easily manage that size.
The shrub leaves are a deep green and oval-shaped shade with smooth edges and a star tip. They form on loosely packed branches with a slight "sway" that catches the summer breeze.
Carolina allspice develops lovely flowers in the spring. They are 2" across, with a cup shape and red to burgundy hue. Approximately twenty tiny disc petals comprise each flower. The blossom fragrance is slightly floral with a pop of spice, giving the plant its common name.
