Button Bush: A Native Marvel for Wetland Gardens

The Button Bush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a stunning native shrub that thrives in damp soils, making it a go-to choice for wetland edges, rain gardens, or lakeside landscapes. Recognized by its whimsical globe-like white flower clusters, this plant draws in a parade of pollinators, from butterflies to hummingbirds, all summer long. The blooms are not only ornamental-they're a vital nectar source in native ecosystems.

Why Gardeners Love Button Bush

Beyond its beauty, the Button Bush offers practical value. It's incredibly low-maintenance once established, and its strong root system plays a role in erosion control-perfect for sloped or flood-prone areas. The glossy green foliage transitions to warm fall hues, giving it multi-season appeal. Best of all, deer tend to avoid it, making it a hardy and reliable option for naturalistic plantings.

Where to Grow Button Bush

Plant Button Bush in full sun to partial shade where soil stays moist or even periodically flooded. It's excellent for riparian buffer zones, native plant restorations, or as a bold anchor shrub in wildlife gardens. Mature plants can reach 6-12 feet tall and wide, so be sure to give it space to thrive. Few plants match the ecological impact and showy charm of this native standout.

This Is How Your Plants Will Look upon Delivery

Bare Root Plants
Plant bare-root shrubs during the more excellent spring or fall months, from November through April. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and slightly more profound than its height. Position the shrub so that the top of the roots is level with the ground, and put back the soil dug over the roots. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring the mulch does not touch the shrub's stem. Water regularly, especially during the first year, to establish strong roots. Prune shrubs as needed to promote healthy growth. In the spring, fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer suited to the specific needs of the shrub.
