Golden Poppy Plant

Golden Poppy Plant
Celandine Poppy
Stylophorum Diphyllum is a sunny yellow native wildflower species that bloom in the spring and early summer. It grows in the full shade in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 9.
Celandine poppy plants grow in small, impressive clumps that look gorgeous in many settings. Whether you pop them into large urns to flank a shady entrance or in a garden border or shade garden, you will love the warm yellow color.
Poppy plants are tall and elegant. The golden flowers measure up to 3" across and have four petals with crinkled edges and lovely rounded shapes. The flower head takes the shape of a shallow saucer.
Caring for Celandine Poppy Plants
This plant is a biennial, meaning it lives for two full seasons or growing cycles. However, it is also a self-seeding plant. That means you do not need to replant it manually--the seeds drop after the flowers fade, so you don't need to do the hard work. Mother Nature will take care of that for you.
Despite being self-seeders, these plants are not overly aggressive in their growth habit. You can plant them without worrying that they will dominate your entire garden. They won't!
This plant does not demand too much of your time. The few requirements it will make are easy:
- Watering: The Celandine Poppy needs about 1" of water each week.
- Drainage: It likes moisture but not wet feet, so be sure the soil drains quickly and thoroughly.
- Fertilizing: Add worm castings, peat moss, or compost several times per year to provide nutrition to your poppies.
- Mulching: Protect your poppies from frost and extreme winter cold by insulating your flowers with a 1" layer of mulch or shredded leaf litter. Pull the layer back in the late winter or early spring.
