Hair Grass

Hairgrass is a cool-season ornamental grass whose fine, hair-like flowers can reach a height of up to 20 inches. Its clump-forming, tussock structure comprises fragile, flat, arching blades that can reach a height of two inches. Native to North America, this plant is commonly used to stabilize disturbed sites, such as streambanks and shorelines. It's also an ideal type of shade grass for your home garden.

Hairgrass is a popular ornamental grass

The lower, dense tussock will fill with dark green grass in the early spring. During mid-summer, this plant will shoot up various flower stems with airy panicles up to 20 inches long. These are tiny flowers in gold, silver, green, and purple shades. After the flowers have bloomed, they will turn to a yellowish-tan hue as their seeds start to ripen. This creates a beautiful golden backdrop during the autumn season.

This highly ornamental grass goes by many names, including Tufted Hair Grass, Deschampsia Cespitosa, Tussock Grass, and Hassock Grass. Hairgrass is very drought-tolerant and virtually disease and pest-free. It's also conveniently deer and rabbit resistant. This architectural grass adds both structure and height to any garden design.

This showy, semi-evergreen belongs to the Poaceae plant family, produces caryopsis fruit, and attracts songbirds. It can thrive in environments with different levels of moisture and sun exposure. This makes it the Perfect Perennials for edging flower gardens or even Rock Gardens.

As the wind blows through its tall seed plumes, Hairgrass can quickly transform into a meadow-like effect when planned in droves of five or more. This low-maintenance, high-impact ground cover offers expansive versatility. It can thrive in a garden setting, a sloped setting, or even a container setup. It also serves as an excellent source of shade for other perennials.

You can expect this hardy, fire-resistant plant to show early growth in the spring, followed by an exhibition of flowers between July and September. Its seeds will start to mature between August and September, when you will see it transition to a golden hue. Once the wintertime coldness sets in, this plant will typically wilt to the ground to prepare for the upcoming year unless grown in a fair climate.
