Hay Scented Fern
Dennstaedtia Punctilobula, hay scented fern is an impressive perennial ground cover that creates a colorful impact with its lush green color and fantastic texture. It's a perfectly-sized plant well-suited for USDA growing zones 3 through 8. It prefers a mix of sun and shade but will also adapt to complete shade.
Hay Scented Fern is a species native to eastern North America
It is a common sight in
woodlands, along streams, and in rocky areas of the eastern mountains--the southern
Appalachians and Ozarks, in particular.
This fern gets its name from its distinctive hay-like scent, which is most noticeable when dry or crushed.
The casual good looks of this fern make it a common garden ornamental plant. Many Wholesale Nursery customers use it as ground cover, accent flower beds, or place near water features or fountains in shaded areas. It also stabilizes soil on slopes and in other erosion control applications.
The fronds of this fern are bright green and form a triangle with a hair-like texture that's soft to the touch. It stays relatively short, usually under 2' but will become as broad as 4' to cover much ground--and faster than you might imagine.
Caring for Hay Scented Ferns
The hay-scented fern is a hardy and undemanding plant that will need very little care--it does not even require you to fertilize it. They are generally disease-resistant and pest-resistant.
