Leatherwood Fern 3 for $14.99
Dryopteris Marginalis is a petite, semi-evergreen fern that can fill even the darkest, shadiest parts of your yard. This shade lover prefers no more than four hours of daily sunshine for the most effortless care and will grow best in USDA plant hardiness Zones 3 through 8.
Leatherwood fern is a hardy, cold-tolerant North American native species that can withstand some of the harshest cold regions in the contiguous United States. This plant is semi-evergreen because some leaves may droop or enter dormancy on the most frigid days and reopen as soon as it gets warmer.
Caring for Leatherwood Ferns
If you plant it in the full shade, Dryopteris Marginalis will require almost no maintenance. It loves a wooded location, where it will share moisture with the trees and take its nourishment from fallen leaves.
The only time you need to pay attention to care is during an extended drought or heat wave--it might need a little watering. It is relatively drought-tolerant, so give it enough to stay alive during a dry spell; it will rebound quickly with the next rainstorm.
They will also tolerate planting in large containers placed on a shady porch, with close attention to watering needs.
Leatherwood Fern Has Colorful, Textural Fronds
Leatherwood fern earns its common name from the leathery, textured fronds. The plant reaches a mature size of about 2' wide and tall. The stems are light brown or tan.
Fronds have 6" long compound leaves. They usually have a blue-green or cool green color that remains colorful even during the winter.
