Orange Daylily
Hemerocallis Fulva is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Asia. Despite its origins, it is an American gardener's favorite for its stunning orange flowers and is well-adapted to our growing conditions. It will do best in the full or filtered sun in USDA plant growing zones 3 to 10.
Orange daylily has long, strap-like leaves that can reach as much as 20" in length and have a grassy-like texture. Its flowers are a true orange, with five petals, a vase shape, and a long, pointed orange and brown center.
The stunning flowers bloom from midsummer to fall and are very fragrant. The fragrance of the orange daylily is unique and quite sweet. It has a strong floral scent with a hint of spice. The smell combines honeysuckle, jasmine, and a hint of citrus. It is a pleasant scent that will linger in the air for a long time after being cut or brushed against.
The vibrant orange petals, sweet floral fragrance, and tubular shape will attract hummingbirds to feast on the nectar. You'll also see butterflies, bees, and birds frequent your garden.
Caring for Orange Daylily
Hemerocallis Fulva has minimal care needs. The plant is easy to grow and will do well in many soil conditions as long as it is moist--not too wet or dry. It is also very tolerant of cold and heat and can thrive in sub-freezing and sub-tropical growing zones.
This cold hardiness makes the orange daylily an ideal choice for gardeners in northern climates looking for a hardy, colorful, and easy-to-care-for plant. Gardeners in the cold zones will also mulch around their orange daylilies before the snow flies.
Orange daylilies can also tolerate drought and require only 1" of water during most of the season and up to 2" while flowering.
