White Violets

Viola Canadensis is a charming little flower and one of springtime's early bloomers. It is most suitable for USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 8 in a mix of sunshine and shade.

White violets are a small perennial herbaceous plant native to Eastern North America. It typically grows in moist, shady woods or along streams and ponds. However, it is also drought-tolerant and will adjust to drier conditions.

White violets, aka sweet violets, are versatile flowers, flourishing in garden beds, containers, or even on a sunny windowsill. It provides a beautiful splash of color to any garden and is an excellent addition to any landscape.

The blossoms are snowy white with five slightly-irregular petals with a bit of a downward curve. Each petal has a small spot of green or yellow on the tip. They often have a slight tinge of purple that pops against the crisp white. The plant also has heart-shaped leaves that are dark green on top and pale underneath. After the flowers fade, the plants remain green for several weeks.

How to Care for White Violets

Caring for white violets is relatively easy. The plant prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Mix in some compost, peat moss, or other organic material during planting for the best results.

White Violets prefer partial shade but will tolerate full sun as long as the soil remains moist. Water the plant regularly, especially during dry spells, and fertilize during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Pinch back spent flowers to encourage more blooming. Be sure to protect the plant from extreme cold and strong winds.

Viola Canadensis is an easy-to-care-for plant that will reward you with beautiful flowers for many years.
