Cardinal Flower Plant

Cardinal Flower Plant

The Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis, a native plant of North America, is known for its red flowers. The red flowers grow from solid and tall stems. A friend to the butterfly and hummingbird, the Cardinal Flower is an excellent addition to any garden. Because of its height, placing the Cardinal Flower as a back border plant is ideal. The Cardinal Flower blooms from July to early fall. It makes it a lovely landscaping addition.

The Cardinal Flower has various plant varieties. Some of the Cardinal Flower's cultivated species include pink and white flowers.

Easy to grow, the Cardinal Flower thrives in hardiness zones 2-6. Initially, the Cardinal Flower grew naturally near streams, wooded areas, and meadows. Moist soil is the preferable home for the Cardinal Flower. Therefore, locations with higher humidity are ideal locations for this plant. The Cardinal Flower has flourished in temperatures as low as 34 degrees.

Water is the key to keeping the Cardinal Flower healthy. The Cardinal Flower will grow well if its soil is kept moist. Never let a Cardinal Flower's soil go dry. A general rule of thumb is to water it twice a week during the hot summer.

The Cardinal Flower enjoys full to partial sunlight

In colder climates, full sunlight is best. However, this perennial should have afternoon shade during summer or hotter temperatures.

The Cardinal Flower is straightforward to maintain. It does not require much fertilizer, either. However, during the late winter, you may add fertilizer or compost to the soil before the growing season. The Cardinal Flower is a self-seeding plant and will produce offspring. To prolong life, divide plants every two to three years.

To keep the Cardinal Flowers in your garden blooming beautifully, we recommend deadheading your plant as needed. Trimming your Cardinal Flower back from time to time may be necessary, but it is also suggested to stay moderate. Since the Cardinal Flower is a self-seeding plant, too much pruning could risk the life and self-propagation of the plant.
